Three Pirate athletes sign with Division I squads

Mepham High School had not one but three fall athletes recently sign with Division I colleges, including seniors Kerry Giovanniello, Samantha Picinich and Anthony Santorelli.
Giovanniello will swim for the University at Buffalo, Picinich will be playing soccer for Rider University in New Jersey, and Santorelli will be playing football for SUNY Stony Brook.

Below are profiles of each of these outstanding athletes. Winter and spring athletes who have signed to compete in college will be announced at a later date, said Mepham Assistant Principal Dr. Jennifer Carne.

Kerry Giovanniello

Hometown: Bellmore
Age: 18
Activities: Member of the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District swim team as well as a the Long Island Aquatic Club in Garden City.
Senior year highlights at Mepham:
• At states: 200-yard freestyle, 1 minute, 51 seconds, third place.
• At states: 500-yard freestyle, 4:56, second place.
Will attend: University at Buffalo
Plans to study: Exercise science
Hopes to become: A physical therapist

Samantha Picinich
Hometown: Bellmore
Age: 18
Activities: Member of the Mepham High School soccer team and the East Meadow Soccer Club Hurricanes, which plays in the Elite Clubs National League; Mepham student government volunteer.
Senior year highlights at Mepham: Scored 12 goals throughout the season. Will remember the Senior Game, a breast-cancer fundraiser played under the lights, most of all.
Will attend: Rider University
Plans to study: Undecided, perhaps accounting

Anthony Santorelli

Hometown: Bellmore
Age: 17
Activities: Member of the Mepham High School football team; formerly a member of the lacrosse and baseball teams. Also a member of the Future Business Leaders of America and a volunteer hall monitor for religious classes at St. Barnabas Roman Catholic Church in Bellmore.
Senior year highlights: Senior Game, making the playoffs.
Will attend: SUNY Stony Brook. Recruited as a long snapper.
Plans to study: Business and marketing
