Three candidates are running for two seats on the Wantagh Board of Education. Incumbents Kera McLoughlin and Peter Mountanos are running as a team. They were both elected in 2013. Jean Quinn, a former school board trustee, is looking to regain a position she held for six years.

Because this is an at-large election, the two candidates with the highest totals will win three-year terms. Voting will take place on Tuesday, May 17 along with the school budget vote.

After a three-year absence, Jean Quinn is looking to return to the Wantagh Board of Education. Quinn was first elected in 2007 and served two terms.

She and her husband, Patrick, both lifelong Wantagh residents, raised their two children in the community. Matthew graduated from Wantagh High School in 2004 and Stony Brook University in 2008, and Michael graduated from Wantagh in 2007 and the College of Mount St. Vincent in 2011.

“My husband and I chose to raise our family in this community in which we both grew up in and love,” she said.

Before joining the Board of Education, Quinn was a special education and classroom teaching assistant in both public and private schools. Before that, she was employed by European American Bank as a corporate cash management officer.

Quinn organized the 60th anniversary celebration for Wantagh Sports Night in 2015, which brought many previous captains back for the milestone. She is a past president of the Mandalay Elementary School PTA and SEPTA, and has been an executive board member for the PTA Council, Booster Club and 6-12 Association. Quinn has also served on the Audit, Budget Advisory, Buildings and Grounds, and Health, Safety and Nutrition committees.

“My vision is to maintain the excellent educational opportunities of our schools while remaining cognizant of the economic climate,” she said. “I will use my experience to balance education and cost containment. As a board trustee, I will continue to foster productive relationships among our families, faculty and the Board of Education. We need to be responsive to the continually changing needs of our population.
