Time to look at redistricting reform

We would like to see members of the County Legislature take up this issue seriously and consider the coalition’s plan. This should be a starting point for discussion about improving the redistricting process going forward. There are a lot of good ideas and a lot of good models to follow, and it will take some time to find a system that works better for Nassau County.

One thing we learned for certain last year is that the current system doesn’t work. It may satisfy the needs of the Republicans, and someday such a system will serve the needs of the majority Democrats, but it seems to us that any process that pleases only the majority party is, ipso facto, bad for the people. We must find ways to fix it.
