Wheeler partnership with Molloy adds art component

The program that brought first-graders from the Wheeler Avenue School to Molloy College last year had its second installment on March 4, this time with second-graders.

The program, Off to Molloy! Full STEAM Ahead!, added an art component this time, turning the science, technology, engineering and math acronym to STEAM. It was first organized last year by Dr. Manyiu Tse, a mathematics professor at the college whose son Julian was a student in Jennifer Bello’s first-grade class at Wheeler.

The hands-on workshops continued this year, with students examining a sheep’s brain, using a Geoboard to learn geometric shapes, creating paper face masks and abstract art pieces, learning how to design and create parachutes and learning computer coding using drag-and-drop programming to create their own video game.

“We hope to expand this and include the primary grades from Wheeler Elementary School,” Tse said.
