Congregation Aish Kodesh on Woodmere Place in Woodmere is one of two Long Island synagogues to receive $75,000 in federal money for security upgrades through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Nonprofit Security Grant Program. The program provides funding for security improvements to nonprofit organizations that are at a high risk of terrorist attacks.
Aish Kodesh and the Chabad Center for Jewish Life in Merrick are expected to use the money for forced-entry-resistant technology, security-modified doors, alarm systems and surveillance cameras.
The DHS grant will allow us to take important steps to better secure our building,” Rabbi Moshe Weinberger, spiritual leader of the Woodmere congregation, said in a release.
Rep. Kathleen Rice (D-Garden City) supported the shul’s grant proposal. “This significant federal investment will allow these institution’s to make needed security improvements that will help prevent acts of terrorism and enhance emergency response capabilities.
