A ‘super’ time at the Oceanside Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast

Posted

The smell of pancakes and the sound of sizzling bacon filled the air in the St. Anthony’s Church’s cafeteria on Feb. 3 as Oceanside Kiwanis hosted its annual Super Bowl Sunday Pancake Breakfast, which was attended by more than 100 community members.

“It’s a lot of work,” Kiwanis President Seth Blau said,” but it’s very rewarding in the end.”

The club, which comprises adult members and Oceanside High School Key Club participants, has fed hungry attendees at the event with a buffet-style breakfast for more than 20 years. Through the breakfast, it has raised funds for the many programs it sponsors and co-sponsors throughout the year through admission fees and raffles.

Most of the money raised will go toward sending underprivileged children in the area to Camp Kiwanis, in upstate New York. Proceeds from the breakfast will help send eight to 10 children to the camp in one-week increments this summer.

“A lot of the food we get is donated, so that helps as far as maximizing our profits,” Blau said.

The International House of Pancakes donated pancake batter to the cause, while residents donated eggs, sausage, bacon, juice, coffee and other treats, and club members offered prizes to be raffled. Blau said there wasn’t a goal for the amount raised, but added that the club likes to stay consistent in its fundraising from year to year. Club member Nancy Baxter coordinated the jobs in the kitchen during the busy morning, he added.

The event helped residents get involved in a good cause and fuel up before watching the New England Patriots defeat the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LIII, which took place at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

“We have a very good pancake breakfast as far as pancake breakfasts go,” Blau said.
