Longtime Cedarhurst mayor and lifetime Five Towns resident Andrew J. Parise died last night. He was 90.

Parise grew up in Inwood as one of six siblings. The Lawrence High School graduate was a World War II veteran who fought at the Battle of the Bulge and throughout Europe. Among his numerous medals is the Purple Heart.

He married Lillian Oliviero in 1945. They raised three children: Andrew Jr., Louise and Davvid.

For more than 60 years, Parise worked in public service. For four decades he served as the chief of staff for the Town of Hempstead. Parise was on the Cedarhurst village board since 1971. He was a trustee and deputy mayor, and became mayor in 1995.

“He was just a remarkable man, just a gem,” said longtime assistant Jo Marie Capone. “He was the most caring, thoughtful person. He loved Cedarhurst. He loved his family. You couldn’t find a better man.”

Parise will be waked at Perry’s Funeral Home at 118 Union Ave. in Lynbrook on Wednesday and Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Joachim R.C. Church at 614 Central Ave. in Cedarhurst on Friday at 10 a.m.
