A Jericho-based attorney was convicted on Jan. 30 of stealing more than $187,000 from her client, a Bellmore woman.

According to Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas, Nancy Enoksen, 49, of Islip, represented the woman in November 2008, helping her to settle a $400,000 personal injury lawsuit, in which the woman was represented by another attorney. Enoksen advised the woman to put the funds into an escrow account, which the attorney would maintain, according to Singas.

Between August and April 2014, Singas said, Enoksen withdrew the funds from the account without the Bellmore woman’s permission or knowledged, using the money for her law practice and expenses including trips to Canada, a monthly BMW car payment and shopping at Lord & Taylor and Macy’s.

Enoksen was convicted of second-degree grand larceny after a seven-day trial and an hour and a half of jury deliberations. Her bail was set for $187,000 — the same amount that she stole from her client — and she is due back in court Feb. 26 for sentencing.

Enoksen faces up to five to 15 years in prison.

“Attorneys have a responsibility to act in the best interest of their clients, but this greedy lawyer betrayed her professional obligations and stole more than $187,000 for personal expenses,” Singas said. “We have prosecuted many unscrupulous attorneys for stealing from their clients, and this case should send a strong message to any shady lawyer that it’s simply not worth it.”
