The Oceanside School District received positive results from their independent audit report regarding the recent fiscal year.

At a Board of Education meeting on Oct. 17, Jennifer Mussaw, supervisor at R.S. Abrams & Company, the firm which performed the audit, said the school district is “in compliance” as of their fiscal year, which ended June 30. She said the school district received “the best opinion you could get,” and only suggested improvements regarding “internal control.”

“Everything looks really good here,” Mussaw said, mentioning the school district performs well on the audit every year.

Superintendent Dr. Phyllis Harrington said the suggestion relates to a surplus the school district had from funds accumulated via school lunch sales. Harrington added, “We will spend the money; not to worry,” and alluded the extra funds could go toward upgrading the kitchen appliances used in the cafeteria at one of the schools.

The budget for the 2018-19 school year is about $154 million, a 2.48 percent increase over last year’s budget. And the district’s tax levy, or the portion of the budget raised through residential and commercial property taxes, was pegged at $123 million, which is a 2.9 percent increase over last year.
