Dean and Adam Skelos head to prison after July convictions

Former State Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos and his son Adam, both of Rockville Centre, were scheduled to report to separate federal prisons on Tuesday after they were convicted on corruption charges in July following a four-week retrial.

Dean, 70, is expected to serve his 4 years and 3 months in prison at the Otisville Correctional Facility in upstate Orange County, news outlets reported. Adam was reportedly slated to serve his 4-year sentence at a low-security prison in Danbury, Conn.

The father and son, both of Rockville Centre, were originally convicted in 2015, after the elder Skelos allegedly used his political power to secure work for Adam at no- or low-show jobs amounting to about $300,000. The two returned to court in June after their convictions were overturned in 2017. They were sentenced in October, after a jury found them guilty.

John J. Kenney, Adam’s attorney, told the Herald on Monday that U.S. District Judge Kimba Wood, who presided over both trials, originally suggested for Adam to serve his four years in Danbury. Wood changed the recommendation last week to Lewisburg Satellite Prison Camp in Pennsylvania, Kenney added, after the attorney made the request to place him where “better programs are available to him.” Kenney said the Federal Bureau of Prisons had not followed Wood’s most recent recommendation as of Monday afternoon.

No request was made for Adam to serve his sentence with his father, Kenney added, noting, “That would be very unusual.”
