A driver was charged with DWI after Long Beach firefighters pulled the man from his overturned sport utility vehicle on Sunday.

Firefighters and police rushed to the scene along the 600 block of East Park Avenue at 3:52 a.m. after the driver allegedly drove while intoxicated and slammed his SUV into a tree. Firefighters said that the force of the crash ripped the front tire from the axle and caused the vehicle to roll over.

“First arriving units found a car with significant front end damage on the passenger side, which had rolled onto its side after coming in contact with a tree,” the Fire Department said on its Facebook page. “The driver had no signs or complaints of injuries, and was removed through the front windshield of the vehicle.”

Long Beach police arrested the driver, whose name was not immediately released, after he was taken to South Nassau Communities Hospital for evaluation in stable condition.
