A man driving on West Olive Street claimed that he lost control of his vehicle when he slammed into a car and home in The Walks neighborhood on Thursday, Long Beach Fire Chief Joseph Miller said.

The four-car collision occurred after 9 a.m. when the man driving a Honda Element crashed into another vehicle, jumped the curb and slammed into a home.

Miller said the driver appeared to be in his late 60s or 70s, and that the man hit a sedan as he made his way down the one-way street, causing the female driver to slam into two parked vehicles. Miller said the cause of the collision has yet to be determined.

“The woman driving was spun around,” Miller said. “The gentleman claimed that his pedal got stuck. He claimed the car wouldn’t slow down. He said that he didn’t have a medical emergency. He seemed fined — his claim was that there was a mechanical issue with the car.”

Long Beach firefighters rushed to the scene, and Miller said both drivers, whose names were not released, were transported to South Nassau Communities Hospital’s Emergency Department at Long Beach with minor injuries. He added that he was not sure how fast the driver was traveling or if the Long Beach Police Department had issued the man any violations.

Miller said the crash caused “superficial damage to the front stucco of the home” but no structural damage. He added that the homeowners were in the house when the crash occurred.

“They were home — a kid was actually in the front room — but there were no injuries,” Miller said.
