East Rockaway HS alumni return to the fold

Posted

East Rockaway High School’s recent relocation to a building in the Baldwin School District, after Superstorm Sandy, could not prevent members of the Class of 2012 from returning for the new “Alumni Day” program, held on Nov. 21.

Twenty members from last year’s graduating class arrived last Wednesday morning to share their college-going experiences with the current juniors and seniors. After enjoying bagels and catching up with fellow graduates, the alumni participated in two panel presentations hosted by the East Rockaway High School guidance department and moderated by Director of Guidance Mona Hecht.

The first session, presented to juniors, focused on the college search process and how to make the most of the high school experience. The second session addressed the college application process, and the transition to college, for the seniors who are currently in the middle of the hectic college application season.

The personal experiences shared by the recent graduates helped to provide direction, calm nerves and bring some needed humor to what can be a stressful time for college bound students. The alumni represented a wide range of colleges and universities including SUNY Cortland, University of Delaware, Wesleyan University, SUNY Binghamton, Molloy College, SUNY Oneonta, University of Massachusetts, York College of Pennsylvania, Nassau Community College, University of Connecticut, Emerson College, SUNY Old Westbury, Emmanuel College, Towson University, Hartwick College, Farmingdale State University, Mt. St. Mary College and Loyola University.
