Helena Costa was working on Nov. 18, when she got a call from her sister who was visiting from Brazil, saying she was struck by a UPS truck and was injured. Costa then called 9-1-1, and ran home to see her.

When Costa arrived at the intersection of Langdon Street and Doris Avenue in Franklin Square, she found her 34-year-old sister with tire marks on her stomach and her back, and covered in blood. “I didn’t even know where the blood was coming from” Costa recounted.

According to the police, the victim, whose name has not yet been released, was crossing the intersection at 5:05 p.m. that day, when a UPS truck traveling northbound on Doris Avenue struck her. Costa said her sister recalled that it seemed the driver was going to make a U-Turn to help her, but continued on his route when she stood up.

“It’s just upsetting,” Costa said. “She kept saying she wants to see the guy and ask why he didn’t help.”

Costa’s sister was transported to a local hospital for injuries to her lungs and spleen, as well as cuts to her liver, which caused internal bleeding. Her condition has not improved since Monday, said Costa, who is now taking care of her sister’s two-year-old son.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1 (800) 244 - TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.
