A fire ripped through a home on Tennessee Avenue in Long Beach on Friday afternoon, Jan. 15, injuring one resident.

Scott Kemins, commissioner of the Long Beach Fire Department, said that the home, at 89 Tennessee Ave., was fully engulfed in flames when the LBFD arrived at the scene after the call came in at 1:50 p.m.

Kemins said that people were home at the time of the fire, and one resident, a woman, was injured but treated at the scene. Some 100 firefighters from eight companies battled the blaze, which took them about 40 minutes to bring under control, but not before it damaged the exteriors of three neighboring homes.

While the fire is still under investigation, Vincent McManus, a division supervisor at Nassau County Fire Marshall Office, said that the blaze started in an outdoor shed that housed a washer and dryer.

“We don’t have an exact cause on the fire, and we’re trying to eliminate all the possibilities of what may of went wrong in there,” McManus said. “There were people home at the time. They heard a noise coming from that area and then saw flames coming from the laundry room.”
