The Oceanside Fire Department responded to an early morning blaze on Nov. 21 at a vacant home on First Street. The Nassau County Fire Marshal’s office said the fire was “suspicious.”

Firefighters responded to a call at 2:17 a.m. at 3423 First St. Fire Chief Kevin Klein said that when his department arrived, the flames were between 20- and 30-feet high, and engulfed “the whole front of the house, the whole corner.” The property is currently for sale. There were no reported injuries.

Because of the late hour of the call, the lack of occupants and “nothing electrical in the vicinity,” Klein said, he called the Nassau County Fire Marshal’s office.

“I felt it warranted more looking into,” he said. “There’s a definite lack of answers as to the cause of the fire.”

Assistant Chief Fire Marshal Michael Uttaro said that though the investigation was still in its early stages, his office considered the fire “suspicious.” He said that fire officials were working with the county police’s Arson/Bomb Squad to investigate further, and would have more information to report in the coming weeks.
