Long Island Cares and Assemblyman John Mikulin, (R, D-17) collected 3,106 pounds of food for the Harry Chapin Food Bank at a food drive on Sept. 8 and 9 at King Kullen in Levittown.

"I'm very pleased that our food drive collected so much food for those in need," said Mikulin. "The amazing turnout is a testament to the kindness and generosity of our community. I'd like to thank all of our residents who donated and Long Island Cares for sharing in our effort to combat hunger in the community."

"We appreciate the effort of Long Island Assembly members working with King Kullen and Long Island Cares; the Harry Chapin Food Bank in the fight against Hunger on Long Island," said Joseph Brown, senior vice president and chief merchandising officer of King Kullen Grocery Co., Inc.

Founded in 1980, the Harry Chapin Food Bank distributes more than eight million pounds of food and supplies each year to over 590 food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, group homes, day treatment facilities, senior nutrition sites and day care centers in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. These agencies, in turn, distribute the food and supplies to their clients and/or provide meals from the food received.

"During a time when food drive donations are historically low and the need for food assistance is more urgent, the second annual Summer Food Drive to End Hunger serves as a significant tool in meeting our vision of a hunger-free Long Island," said William Gonyou, the food drive manager with Long Island Cares. "This series of food drives helps us to put more food on the tables of our families, friends, and neighbors facing food insecurity. We are very grateful to Assemblyman John Mikulin for his participation and recognizing the truth of hunger on Long Island, and for his decision to stand and act on behalf of those in need."
