Forest Lake volleys to victory at PTA games

Posted

PTA members from Wantagh Elementary, Mandalay and Forest Lake schools battled it out on the volleyball court at the high school on March 15.

A crowd of about 300 people cheered on Wantagh teachers and parents at the eighth annual PTA Council volleyball games. Mascots from all three of the district’s elementary schools made an appearance to promote Wantagh spirit.

The event also featured raffles. Funds raise through the drawings will go towards scholarships for high school students.

“It brings the entire community together, including the district’s middle school, high school and all three elementary schools,” Liz Greco, a former PTA Council president, said. “It has been an amazing event from its start in 2009, and I love working with people that I don’t normally see and get to view them in a different light.”

Organizers raised close to $2,000 for scholarships for graduating high school seniors this year. Greco said that the council usually grants anywhere from four to six scholarships per year.

Although all three schools each won one match, Forest Lake took home the gold in the event’s final game. Members of the 6-12 Association, including coordinators Amy Wehr and Christina Zanelotti, also helped plan the event and made sure that everyone was having a good time.

“It’s a great event and the kids absolutely love it,” Greco added. “It’s a nice to see all the kids come out and watch their teachers play. They can’t contain their excitement.”
