Fun Salon haircutting event benefits children with cancer

The Fun Salon in West Hempstead got down to some serious business when more than a dozen students, teachers, and mothers from Yeshiva Har Torah in Little Neck participated in a group hair donation on May 15.

Participants each donated at least eight inches of hair, which will be delivered to Zichron Menachem – an Israeli association supporting children with cancer – to make wigs for them.

All participants’ haircuts were donated by the Fun Salon, and lunch was provided by community businesses.

In total, 22 ponytails were donated, including 6 ponytails from students and parents who had previously cut their hair and saved it for donation. 

Maya, a second grader who now sports a summer bob hairstyle, said that she was inspired by seeing her older sister donate and wanted “help sick kids look normal until they are strong and healthy enough to grow back their own hair and feel pretty again.”  Orit Lax said that for her and her daughter Adina, donating is “very personal as my husband, Adina’s father, is a cancer survivor. Doing this together is a bonding experience that we are glad to be repeating two years after our last donation,” she said.

In addition to the haircutting event, the entire school is collecting money for Zichron Menachem. The event was organized by the school’s PTA.
