Garden City beats Carey for Three-Peat

For the ninth time in 10 years, Garden City or Carey is standing atop Nassau Conference II football.

Trevor Yeboah-Kodie had a pair of first-quarter touchdown runs and quarterback Colin Hart ran and threw for scores in the first half as top-seeded Garden City won its third straight county title and upped its winning streak to 35 straight with a convincing 43-13 victory last Friday afternoon at Hofstra.

The Trojans (11-0) built an insurmountable 30-0 halftime cushion and will face Lindenhurst in the Long Island Class II championship game this Friday at Stony Brook University at 12 p.m. Carey (8-3), which had won six in a row, was outgained by a 297 to 11 margin in the first half.

“It was a tough end to a great season,” Seahawks head coach Mike Stanley said. “I’m proud of this group. They came together after the Week 4 loss and won six straight, five of which we dominated. They were selfless and committed.”

Garden City put together touchdown drives of 71, 65 and 62 yards, the latter on one play, in the first quarter to lead 20-0. Yeboah-Kodie capped the opening possession with a 4-yard score, set up by Hart’s 29-yard completion to Boccafola.

Hart kept the next possession alive with a 19-yard gain on fourth-and-9 from the Carey 40. Three plays later, his 7-yard touchdown run made it 13-0. It was 20-0 after Yeboah-Kodie went 62 yards off a direct snap. In the second quarter, Chase Gardi added a 27-yard field goal and Hart connected with Joe Scattareggia into triple coverage for a 23-yard touchdown on fourth-and-16.

The Seahawks, who rallied to beat MacArthur in the semifinals, 13-6, thanks in large part to a big second half from sophomore running back Anthony DeNicola (102 yards, two touchdowns), got on the board against Garden City in the second half with a 6-yard touchdown run by Nick Giacalone and an 80-yard kickoff return by Riley DeMeo.
