Garden Club hosts a floral affair

Posted

Members of the Wantagh-based Paumanacke Garden Club and local folks came together for a floral affair on April 27. The organization held a fundraiser at the Wantagh Knights of Columbus Hall.

The Paumanacke Garden Club was founded in 1931. A group of men and women from Wantagh, Seaford, Massapequa and Amityville met at Paul Craig’s home with the intention of forming a garden club. The initial membership consisted of 10 people, and Craig was elected president. The main interest of the group was horticulture, particularly planting of trees in the area.

The name Paumanacke means “island of shells.” The scallop shell was adopted as a symbol of the club.

In recent years, the club has coordinated with the Wantagh Chamber of Commerce in several beautification projects. Throughout the year, members organize activities to promote gardening in public spaces.

The fundraiser featured international desserts, raffle and door prizes. Flowers by Matthew donated arrangements for the event.
