Homeless man charged in alleged East Atlantic Beach rape

A homeless man was arrested and charged in what police describe as a “violent rape” at an Oswego Avenue home in East Atlantic Beach at 8 p.m. on Oct. 1. 

Nassau County police said that Adan Alvarez, 23, connected with a 31-year-old woman on the social media site Locanto, and they met at an Oswego Avenue home in East Atlantic Beach.

After meeting  Alvarez, the woman tried to leave and was physically assaulted, restrained and sexually assaulted, according to police. After Alvarez left, the woman freed herself and called police. She was taken to an area hospital and admitted with a broken nose, fractured skull, and several cuts and bruises.

Authorities canvassed the area and distributed a composite sketch of Alvarez. On Oct. 4, police received a 911 call for a possible trespasser in a shed at an East Atlantic Beach home on Mohawk Avenue. There, Fourth Precinct officers found Alvarez hiding, identified him as the suspect in the assault and rape, and arrested him. 

Officials charged Alvarez with two counts of first-degree rape, five counts of second-degree assault, criminal obstruction of breathing (also called strangulation), first-degree burglary, second-degree unlawful imprisonment, second degree kidnapping and third-degree criminal trespassing.

Alvarez was arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead on Oct. 5. He is being held without bail. The Legal Aid Society of Nassau County is representing him. His next court date is Oct. 8.
