How can I become a candidate in Rockville Centre's June election?

The Village of Rockville Centre is set to hold an election on Tuesday, June 18, as Mayor Francis X. Murray, Village Justice William Croutier Jr., Deputy Mayor Kathy Baxley and Trustee Michael Sepe will seek re-election to four-year terms.

Residents interested in running for any of the seats must submit petitions by May 14. But what exactly does that entail?

To run for office, an aspiring candidate must file a petition with the village clerk that has signatures of at least 100 registered voters — United States citizens at least 18 years of age and residents of the village for at least 30 days before the election who are registered with the Nassau County Board of Elections.

The first day to file the nominating petition is May 7, and the last day is May 14. Candidates of an independent body then have until May 17 to file a certificate of acceptance of nomination. That same day, at 4 p.m., candidates’ biographies and photos are due. The village then provides that information to various publications.

Candidates can list information about their education, work experiences, volunteer service, family background and other facts they would like to share with the public. However, they can only characterize their background to a limited degree, according to instructions in the village’s Candidate Packet, and a statement about experiences or positions being a reason to vote for a candidate, for example, will be deleted.

In addition, “Subjective statements that are directly persuasive, interpretive, or opinionated — such as a candidate’s political philosophy or reasons for running — will not be disseminated,” it states.
