It was cloudy but relatively dry last Saturday as Island Park held its annual Little League parade. Celebrating 60 years of the tradition, Island Park Little League Commissioner Jack Vobis helped lead the parade from its starting location at Village Hall to its terminus at Shell Creek Park.

“A lot of kids have stood where you’re standing today,” Vobis said at the park’s baseball diamond, “and they’re proud you’re following in their footsteps.” Mayor Michael McGinty then took to the mound and threw the first pitch of the season.

The Island Park Fire Department and Nassau County police served as an escort for the parade. After the season-opening ceremony, the kids streamed into the park’s recreation center for pizza. More than 100 Little Leaguers, parents, friends and family members attended the festivities.
