John Tavares, the 19-year-old phenom selected by the New York Islanders as the first overall choice in 2009, addressed members of the media following the team's pick in the 2010 NHL draft on Friday.

With the No. 5 overall pick in the NHL Draft, the Islanders selected Nino Niederreiter, a Swiss defenseman who last played for the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League. Neiderreiter also played for Team Switzerland in the World Junior Championships, where he led his team with 10 points in seven games.

Tavares, with teammates Matt Moulson and Trevor Gillies, appeared at the Islanders' draft party hosted at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Fans were treated to free games, activities and demonstrations as they watched the NHL draft together on the big screen.

Tavares discussed the Islanders selection, talked about what it was like to be a No. 1 pick and provided an update on his foot injury.
