Journeying to Decision Day was not done alone

Posted

May 1, a day of excitement and celebration. In just a couple of days, Hewlett High School seniors will fill the hallways with spirit as we proudly display what college we will soon be attending.

Known as Decision Day, May 1 is the day when seniors — if they have not done so already — decide which college they will be attending, and formally commit. It is a day that high school students dream of, filled with a sense of accomplishment and pride. After almost four years of high school and seemingly endless hard work, we can now celebrate our impressive feats as we look forward to the future.

The hallways will be overflowing with students wearing T-shirts, sweatshirts, pants, shorts, hats, headbands, temporary face tattoos, stickers and jewelry with the names of many different colleges from across the globe. In recent years, trendy college game day apparel has become increasingly popular. Students are eager to support their college and their school’s teams as they wear their new apparel on this momentous day.

This day signifies the culmination of years of hard work and determination: homework, projects, tests, varying extracurricular activities and hundreds of school days. And while we have worked so hard to get to where we are today, it is vital to remember that we have not gotten here alone.

We have had our parents, siblings and family members as our cheerleaders, waiting to see us succeed and grow. We have had teachers who have challenged us, and taught us lessons beyond the textbook curriculum.

And while we may not have appreciated the long and difficult assignments at the time, we will come to realize that those that pushed our limits are the ones that have prepared us so well for the coming years. We have had loyal friends, many who have been with us since our days at Franklin Early Childhood Center, who have stood by us and grown up with us.

As we celebrate Decision Day in our favorite college apparel, we can excitedly discuss our future plans while remembering what we have accomplished to get here, and who helped us along the way.
