A Long Beach couple was arrested Sunday following an alleged assault on a New York State trooper on the Southern State Parkway.

According to state police, the incident occurred during a traffic stop at 1:35 a.m. at exit 21 in Hempstead.

Police said troopers pulled over Michael Nelson, 38, and his wife, Alexandra, 29, as they headed westbound in a 2017 Mercedes-Benz.

Police said Michael Nelson, who was driving the vehicle, was found to be intoxicated by alcohol.

While he was being taken into custody for allegedly driving drunk, police said Michael Nelson struck a trooper in the face with a head butt several times, and also struck the trooper’s body.

Police said that Alexandra Nelson exited the vehicle and attempted to obstruct the arrest of her husband. She was also taken into custody. The couple was transported to the East Meadow barracks for processing.

Police said that while at the station, Michael Nelson “continued to act belligerent and refused to cooperate with the chemical tests.”

“Mrs. Nelson remained combative,” police said in a news release. “In addition to spitting at the troopers, she also threw her shoes and soiled underwear at them.”

Michael Nelson was charged with driving while intoxicated, assault, criminal possession of a controlled substance, resisting arrest and harassment.

Alexandra Nelson was charged with attempted assault, criminal possession of a controlled substance, obstructing governmental administration and disorderly conduct.

The Nelsons were transported to the Nassau County Detention Center and were set to be arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead.
