Long Beach train service suspended for the weekend

The Long Island Rail Road’s Long Beach branch will be out of service this weekend due to restoration efforts related to Hurricane Sandy.

According to a statement on the LIRR’s website, the Long Beach branch will be out of service starting Friday, Sept. 20 at 10 p.m. till Monday, Sept. 23 at 1 a.m. During that time, buses will replace service between the Valley Stream branch and the Long Beach Branch. The statement said that LIRR crews will perform maintenance of the several parts of the branch.

“LIRR forces [will] perform signal work related to Superstorm Sandy restoration efforts, in addition to maintenance on the Reynold’s Channel Bridge, which connects Island Park and Long Beach,” the statement said.

The LIRR has encouraged Lynbrook customers to use the Babylon branch trains, for travel to and from the Jamaica branch and Penn Station, in order to avoid busing. The LIRR has also asked customers to plan for at least 28 minutes for additional travel time.
