The Lynbrook Police Department arrested a member of the Hempstead School District for possession of marijuana on May 11.

Melissa Figueroa, 37, of Hempstead, was driving on Lakeview Avenue near Ocean Avenue in Lynbrook at around 10:30 p.m. shortly after a school board meeting that night when a police officer noticed she was not wearing a seat belt, according to Lynbrook Police Chief Joe Neve. She was then pulled over.

“There was an odor of marijuana, and we found a half-used marijuana cigarette inside the car,” Neve said. Figueroa was then placed under arrest.

Figueroa, who was up for re-election in Tuesday’s Board of Education elections, is set to appear in First District Court in Hempstead on June 15.
