Lynbrook High School class of 2018 graduate John Krendel was one of five local area students to receive a scholarship from New York American Water.

Krendel will attend James Madison University, in Virginia, in the fall and plans to dual major in international business and cello performance. His essay in the competition was about a science research project he worked on in which he designed a copper water purification device aimed at killing ions and other types of bacteria as water makes its way from a source into a person’s home.

“It’s an insert for water and a transportation device that holds 90 liters of water,” Krendel explained. “I’m still doing tests with it and will continue to pursue it in college.”

Krendel was involved in many extracurricular activities during his time at Lynbrook High. He belonged to the National Honor Society, the National Music Honor Society, the marching band, the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York, the Long Island Youth Orchestra, the Five Towns/Rockaway Symphony Orchestra and was a member of the varsity bowling team. In addition, he served as the president of the Culinary Arts club and the vice president of the Lynbrook Symphony Orchestra, all while being on the principal’s honor roll. He also volunteered time as a member of a quartet that performed for terminally ill children.

For the past eight years, NYAW and the New York Chapter of the National Association of Water Companies has awarded students within the service area who are passionate about the water industry. Krendel received a $3,000 scholarship this year.

“We congratulate John on all of his achievements — both academically and through his work within the community,” NYAW President Carmen Tierno said in a release. “We wish you nothing but the best of luck as you continue your education and pursue a career that will give back to the water industry and everyone who relies on [it].”

Krendel said he isn’t sure what he wants to do after college, but expressed gratitude for being awarded the scholarship. “It makes me feel very accomplished,” he said.
