Lynbrook's Dance Workshop is still grooving after 40 years

In 1979, MaryAnn Grasso founded Dance Workshop in Valley Stream. Then, about 15 years ago, she and her daughter, Nanci, moved the dance studio to a larger location at 445 Merrick Road in Lynbrook.
“It was a great decision because we just love the community of Lynbrook,” said Nanci, who co-owns the studio with her mother.
Over the studio’s 40 years, MaryAnn and Nanci said the dance business has changed a lot. Nanci said that since they moved to Lynbrook, there have been more dance television shows, which she said, “has really put dance on the forefront.”
She said one of the things that has made the Dance Workshop so successful for four decades has been the family atmosphere created there. Nanci noted that she has developed life-long friendships at the business and that others have even met their significant others by dancing at the studio. In addition, she added, families have continued to dance at the studio since its inception.
“We’ve had students whose children have danced with us, and whose grandchildren are now dancing with us,” Nanci said. “So, it’s been a generational experience.”

To celebrate the studio’s 40th anniversary this upcoming school year, an open house is planned for Sept. 9, during which the business will be offering a free dance class. At the end of the school year in June, a large recital will be hosted at Hofstra University, and will showcase music and performances from the 40 years that have passed since Dance Workshop was founded.
“It’s just an exciting time of growing and expanding our dance community,” Nanci said.
