Malverne H.S. names its 2017 val and sal

Malverne High School’s Alexis Murry and Alyssa McDaniel earned the highest and second highest grade-point averages, respectively, of all their peers through their four years of high school and have been named valedictorian and salutatorian of the class of 2017.

Murry is no stranger to being named valedictorian; she also earned that title in 2013 at Howard T. Herber Middle School. At the high school, she is enrolled in nine Advanced Placement courses, was named an AP Scholar, All-County Musician and was a fixture on the High Honor Roll for all four years. In addition, she was a member of the National Honor Society, Tri-M Music Honor Society, International Thespian Society Troupe 4419, Health and Wellness Club, Select Choir, Model UN, Girls Club, Pride of Malverne Marching Band, color guard and Community Service Club. She was also president of the Book Club, and a participant at DOSHI STEM and Project Lead the Way. Murry was a mentor at Camp Read-A-Lot, a peer leader at freshman orientation, participated in the Relay for Life and Breast Cancer walks for all four years of her high school career, and volunteered in the blood drive and UFCW Local 1500.

McDaniel was also named salutatorian in 2013 at Howard T. Herber Middle School. At high school, she is enrolled in nine Advanced Placement courses, consistently earned a spot on the High Honor Roll, was named an All-County musician, and was a bronze medal winner in biology/microbiology in the NAACP’s ACT-SO 2016 competition. She was also a member of the National Honor Society, Foreign Language Club, Black Studies Club and varsity tennis team. McDaniel served as vice president of the Book Club, secretary of the Girls Club, and a volunteer in the school’s fashion show. In addition, she tutored in the Homework Center, worked in the Hofstra University Counselor Apprentice program, was a mentor in the school’s peer-mentoring program and was an alternate delegate for Girl Scout Governance in Nassau County.
