Mary E. "Sugar" VanFleet

Long time Rockville Centre resident Mary E. VanFleet, (nee McLaughlin), also known to many as “Sugar,” died on Nov. 3 at the age of 83. The cause of death was cancer.

Sugar was born and raised in Rockville Centre until she moved to Englewood, Fla. in 1981 where she was living at the time of her death. Her husband, Richard E. VanFleet predeceased her in January 1994 and her only sibling, William J. McLaughlin, died in November 2008. Sugar and Dick had no children.

Sugar was employed by the Village of Rockville Centre for 33 years as a secretary. After moving to Florida, she became a volunteer with the Englewood Chamber of Commerce, Meals on Wheels and was the editor of the Edgewater Newsletter.

Sugar is survived by her sister-in-law, Llyn H. McLaughlin and her children, William, Laurie Zangrillo, Thomas, Erin, Jeana, Lisa Rorer, Marnie Whitehead, their spouses and her nieces Jo Tripp and Susse Marbie. She also leaves behind 20 grand/great nieces and nephews.

Cremation was held privately in Port Charlotte, Fla. Memorial donations may be made to Meals on Wheels, 400 Loma Linda, Englewood, FL 34223 or Hospice of New York, 45-18 Court House Square, Suite 500, Long Island City, NY 11101.
