Mercy offers space to group in wake of Hurricane

With facilities in Long Beach still unavailable due to damage from Hurricane Sandy, Mercy Medical Center will hold the Long Beach Medical Center Breast Cancer and Breast Health Support Group meetings at its facility in Rockville Centre.

Beginning in January, meetings will be held at Mercy on the second and fourth Monday of each month at 7 p.m. in the hospital’s boardroom, located on the first floor, adjacent to the chapel.

Led by a registered nurse, the group offers a positive and supportive environment for individuals with breast health issues, and residents of all nearby communities are invited to attend.

The group offers support, guidance and education on the emotional, physical and psychological aspects of coping with breast cancer and other breast health issues, its impact on the individual as well as the family, and information on topics such as understanding your diagnosis, treatment options, chemotherapy, radiation, pain management, exercise, nutrition, stress management and more.

Mercy’s ongoing efforts to assist the storm-devastated Long Beach community also include facilitating continuity of care by providing temporary space to Dr. Joel Benowitz, a surgeon whose offices were destroyed by the storm.
