Native Malvernite Kevin McCarthy was recalled by the Kansas City Royals on May 29 and made his season debut that evening against the Detroit Tigers at Kauffman Stadium.

The 25-year-old righthander was the seventh and final pitcher to appear for the Royals in the 10-7 loss to the Tigers. Pitching the ninth inning, he got J.D. Martinez to fly out to right field and struck out Justin Upton before retiring Nick Castellanos on another fly ball to right.

Before to his recall, McCarthy appeared in 16 games for Triple-A Omaha and went 1-1 with a 2.53 earned-run average.

McCarthy made his major league debut last year as a September call-up and tossed 8 1/3 innings over 10 outings, posting a 6.48 ERA with seven strikeouts and five walks. He is on the Royals’ 40-man roster.

Kansas City selected McCarthy in the 16th round of the 2013 draft. Over parts of five minor league seasons, he compiled a 2.91 ERA with 22 saves.

McCarthy, who has lived in Rockville Centre since 2006, was a four-year varsity baseball player at Kellenberg High School
