North Shore wins six of seven

North Shore’s girls’ lacrosse team carries a 7-4 record within the stingy Nassau Conference I with the county playoffs on the horizon.

After snapping their 5-game win streak with a 7-2 loss to Manhasset on April 27 in a 7-2 loss and then getting back on track last Saturday with a 13-7 win over Farmingdale, the Lady Vikings are riding a momentum wave heading into the last three games of the regular season.

“We absolutely have a lot of momentum heading into these last few games,” North Shore head coach Megan McCormick said. “Our girls are playing excited, and they’re playing as a team; they’re having fun.”

The excitement stems from their success in one of the toughest and most competitive high school sports conferences on Long Island. A five-game win streak has McCormack’s bunch both confident and electrified to compete in these last few games of the regular season.

North Shore walked into a tough atmosphere playing a solid Manhasset team. After a few defensive miscues, Manhasset walked away with a 7-2 victory, tying its record with North Shore both in conference record (4-4) and overall (7-4) as well.

“We didn’t play well in the transition game. We let up too many opportunities defensively and there were some miscommunications. These are all things that we have been working on since the loss,” McCormack said.

After snapping an impressive multi-week win streak, McCormack’s crew strolled in to Farmingdale focused and looking for redemption. Last Saturday, North Shore took on Farmingdale in a conference matchup that may have been the antithesis of their previous game. In the game prior where North Shore only allotted two goals in the scoring column, the Lady Vikings completely shifted their production to overdrive where they not only scored 13 goals, but also forced the opposing goalie to make 17 saves.

Madeline Podaras continued her scorching hot season with another 8 points in the contest. “She’s definitely very important to our team, along with Alana Greene and Ashleigh Sheerin and a few others, we have a couple of integral players to this team,” McCormack said. Greene finished the game with two goals and an assist. Sheerin and Caitlin Colbert both finished with two points, as Hannah Moran, Micaela Fitzpatrick, and Gabriella Scott all scored a goal to add to the tally.

Goalie Quinn Lacy, one of McCormack’s most improved players over the offseason, finished with 8 saves.

McCormack, although focused on this season, was also very excited that with some of her core players being juniors, they would be able to progress and improve over the offseason and return as further team leaders next year.

The victory over Farmingdale puts the Lady Vikings back in the win column and on the road to another win streak to end the season. Massapequa is next on the cue, and North Shore is ready. Upon being asked if she can foresee another win streak start to formulate with a win over Massapequa, McCormack said: “Massapequa is a very solid program; they have a lot of talent, but I think we’re very talented and I think we’re ready.”

North Shore also hosts a Make-a-Wish tribute game for individuals suffering from cystic fibrosis this Thursday, May 4.
