ACTION fundraising to light up Oceanside this holiday season

The Alliance of Citizens to Improve Oceanside New York, or ACTION, originally started as a way to inform Oceanside residents of progress made on state and federally funded flood mitigation projects in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. But this year, the non-profit civic group is trying something different as it embarks on its first neighborhood beautification effort.

Dubbed Illuminate to Celebrate, ACTION is fundraising to purchase lighted sparkling snowflakes to be placed on 22 utility poles along Long Beach Road in Oceanside this holiday season. ACTION Vice President Joann Calabro said that she noticed downtown areas and main streets lined with decorations as she drove through other neighborhoods and thought, “Why can’t that be Oceanside?”

“Now it can be,” she said and added that she hopes the lights would help residents and visitors get in the holiday spirit, and perhaps visit some local shops. ACTION is looking to reach an initial fundraising goal of $24,000 to purchase the snowflake lights, and would like to expand the project in the coming years to include more poles and streets.
