Oceanside Girl Scouts kick off the cookie sale season

It was a deliciously fun evening in the gymnasium at Castleton Academy High School on Jan. 27 as the Girl Scouts of Oceanside gathered for their special cookie season kick-off event.

The outing was organized by fifth-grade Girl Scouts in Junior Troop 2083, and was open to all Oceanside Daisy Scouts — which comprises kindergarten students and first-graders.

“It was a huge success,” said Maria Vitale, the servicing volunteer manager for Oceanside Girl Scouts. “We received nothing but compliments about how all the older girls took care of the younger girls.”

Vitale praised the Junior Scouts for their careful planning of the event, and expressed her appreciation for Rosemary Olenick and Jennifer Gemmo, the chairpersons for the Scouts.

Activities at the event included making turtles out of paper, crafting mermaids out of popsicle sticks and a cookie parade around the gym. Additionally, the scouts discovered their “cookie names” by using their first initial and birth date, and the 70 Daisies in attendance had the opportunity to sample the cookies that are available for sale this year.

“They had a great time laughing and singing,” Vitale said of the scouts. “It was a really cute day.”
