Oceanside Kiwanis brings the pancakes

It was the morning of the big game, and following a nearly 20-year tradition, dozens of Oceansiders gathered in the St. Anthony’s Church cafeteria for the annual Oceanside Kiwanis Super Bowl Pancake Breakfast. Serving as one of the club’s chief fundraisers, the breakfast is an opportunity for the community to get engaged, help with a good cause and have some pre-football fun.

“We get everyone involved,” Oceanside Kiwanis President Seth Blau said of the volunteers, which include adult club members as well as Key Club participants in the high school. “They’re all very excited to help out. It takes quite a bit of coordination.”

From 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. kids and adults alike had the opportunity chow down on a buffet-style breakfast with eggs, bacon sausage, coffee, juice and, of course, pancakes. Entertainment included raffles, crafts and activities for kids. All of it was in preparation for the Super Bowl that night.

“In some ways it’s like our signature event,” Blau said. “People know of the pancake breakfast.”

He added that he knows of many other Kiwanis clubs that have annual pancake breakfasts but, he said, “We’ll always say ours is the best.”
