Parkland shooting documentary to premiere at Bellmore Playhouse

Charlie Minn, a Long Island filmmaker, will be releasing “Parkland: Inside Building 12,” a documentary about the Parkland mass shooting, on Monday, Sept. 24 at the Bellmore Playhouse.

Minn interviews victims that were present at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Feb. 14, the day of the shooting, such as Maddy Wilford, who was shot but survived. Through the interviews and real-life footage from inside the school, the focus is kept on the victims, highlighting the raw emotion that followed a tragedy that left 17 killed.

“I am a ‘victim-driven’ filmmaker,” Minn wrote on the website for the documentary, insidebuilding12.com. “For the average person who follows the news, ask them to name the Parkland killer, and they will go one-for-one, then ask them to name one person shot in Parkland, and they will probably go zero for 34. I am trying to change this entire dialogue.”

Partial proceeds from the box office will benefit the Scott J. Beigel Memorial Fund, which provides a scholarship for children to attend camp. Beigel is a Long Island native and Stoneman Douglas High School teacher and cross-country coach who sacrificed his life to lead students to safety.

The night of the premiere will include a dinner that Minn and Beigel’s family will attend. An entrance fee of $30 will give access to the premiere screening of the documentary, free popcorn and soft drinks and the dinner.

If you cannot make Monday's premiere, the documentary can still be supported for its minimum week-long run at the Playhouse starting on Friday, Sept. 28. Daily show times are 1:30 p.m., 4 p.m., 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
