Peterna fixes elevator three weeks early

The senior independent living apartment complex at 45 Wallace St. in Freeport, Peterna Terrace, has had a broken elevator since June 21. The sole elevator in the five-story complex was finally repaired as of Aug. 10 — three weeks ahead of schedule.
“We are happy to announce that the elevator at Peternana Terrace was repaired and officially reopened,” shared Umerto Mignardi, communications manager of Catholic Charities of Rockville Centre via email.
In an article, that ran on July 27 in the Freeport Herald Leader, the organization said the repairs would take six to eight weeks, in spite of maintenance crews working six days a week and 12-hour days. The elevator broke down due to mechanical issues. The inconvenience prompted Catholic Charities to increase services, two on-call medical personnel and increased security, which aided residents with mail, laundry and grocery deliveries.
The organization also provided temporary accommodations at a local hotel for residents who opted to move out while the repairs were underway. Now that the elevator has been fixed, residents can return to their apartments and resume their daily routines. Catholic Charities officials said they were going to take proactive measures to maintain a regularly scheduled maintenance and inspections of the elevator.
“I don’t know that things can be prevented entirely and these are things that happen on rare occasions,” Mignardi said. “We believe the team we hired to fix the elevator provided us with the best service and we spared no expense to get this fixed. We are thrilled the repairs were completed ahead of schedule.”
In efforts to thank the residents for their patience and understanding during the repairs, Mignardi says Catholic Charities will host a light lunch for the residents on Aug. 25.
“We thank the seniors, who are our residence, for their patience,” Mignardi said. “We remain committed to developing safe affordable housing for Long Island seniors.”
