Man critically injured after struck by driver who left the scene
Nassau County and Long Beach police are investigating a hit-and-run incident on Sunday that left a man in critical condition.
Police said that the 50-year-old victim was entering his parked vehicle on Riverside Boulevard near East Hudson Street at 5:35 a.m. on Jan. 28. Long Beach Police Commissioner Mike Tangney said that the man was leaving for work when a driver traveling northbound veered into the southbound lane and struck the man.
The driver sent the victim into another parked vehicle, causing him to hit his head and face, police said. The victim sustained multiple fractures and severe head trauma, and was transported by ambulance to South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside, where he was listed in extremely critical condition.
“He was responding to treatment and his condition was improving during the day yesterday,” said Tangney, adding that he did not know the status of the man's condition on Monday.
The driver left the scene, police said, and did not stop to help the victim. The incident is being investigated by Long Beach detectives and the Nassau County Police Department’s Homicide Squad; there was no description of the driver or vehicle.
“We have some places that have cameras, and we’re trying to recover video,” Tangney said.
