Powerful nor'easter blows through Lynbrook, East Rockaway

A powerful nor'easter whipped across Nassau County, dumping  3 to 6 inches on the South Shore. The snow, at times, mixed with light rain, leaving a thin sheen of ice atop the white stuff in Lynbrook and East Rockaway.

Lynbrook Mayor Alan Beach said Department of Public Works Superintendent Phil Healey made sure to get salt and sand delivered two days before the storm, and that his office was monitoring the storm as it happened Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

"I asked the residents via robo call to remoe their cars from roadways throughout the village, which allows the plows to remove the snow from the roadway," Beach said. "There wasn't a doubt in my mind that the Lynbrook team of police, the Fire Department, the DPW and office would do a great job."

East Rockaway Mayor Bruno Romano said the Department of Public Works was prpeared with salt, sand and equipment to handle the storm.

"This storm was more challenging as we had snow, hail rain and then back to snow again," he said. "Our crew was out all night monitoring the snow, and ensuring the safety of our residents. With freezing temperatures approaching, we will continue to salt the roadways to maintain safety on our streets."

Romano requested that all residents remove any vehicles from roadways so the Department of Public Works is able to properly plow and treat the streets.

As the storm ensued, the Long Island Rail Road was running 10 to 15 behind schedule systemwide. NICE Bus also reported delays.

PSEG-LI reported that about 3,300 Long Islanders lost power overnight, with 150 outages on Thursday morning.

The Lynbrook Public Schools and East Rockaway School District were each closed on Thursday.
