Facility to open Memorial Day Weekend

Seasonal workers swept the grounds of the Lynbrook pool at Greis Park and cleaned its interior on May 21 in preparation for its opening on Saturday. Later in the week, they planned to set up lounge chairs around the pool, train lifeguards and clean the bathrooms.

“It’s just a lot of work,” Lynbrook Parks Supervisor Patrick McDermott said.

McDermott added that members of the Department of Public Works would then fill the pool with water, make sure the pumps are working and paint the slides.

“The Lynbrook DPW, Phil Healey and them, they really do a lot,” he said.

All of the work must be completed by May 26, when the pool is set to open for an estimated 2,300 Lynbrook and Rockville Centre residents, who will be able to cool off on a hot summer’s day in a slide pool, a kiddie pool or a regular swimming pool. New additions for this season include several summer concerts and a revamped concession stand, which offers wraps, salads, hamburgers, hotdogs and chicken fingers.

“It’s a great time,” McDermott said. “It’s like a stay-vacation.”

Pool members are also welcome to participate in the village’s summer swim team, which won the Division II championship last year. The team is open to children between the ages of 5 and 17. “The kids have a blast doing it,” McDermott said.

Last year, more than 120 children participated on the swim team and this year, McDermott is anticipating having 150 children participate on either of the two swim teams. According to McDermott, the Recreation Department set up a second team to better meet the needs of the members. The second squad will be a division IV club for less-experienced swimmers.

“They’re going to get more time to swim and grow more,” he explained.

The Lynbrook pool will be open weekends from May 26 to June 16, after which it will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. until Labor Day.

To enjoy the pool, Lynbrook and Rockville Centre residents must bring two proofs of residency to the Recreation Center. The cost for a family membership for Lynbrook village residents is $365, and is $470 for residents of the unincorporated part of Lynbrook. An individual plan for an adult Village of Lynbrook resident is $170 for the season, and costs an adult from the unincorporated part of Lynbrook $200. The Recreation Department also offers a 10 percent discount for Lynbrook Volunteer Fire Department members and veterans with a proper identification card.

For Rockville Centre residents, a family membership costs $780, and an individual adult membership costs $520.

East Rockaway residents who want to cool off in a pool are permitted to use the facility at Hewlett Point Park, which costs non-district residents $266 for a seasonal family membership or a $145 seasonal individual membership. A day pass costs a non-resident individual $6.50.
