Athletes and their families from around Long Island ran through Cedar Creek Park during the Miles for Matt Foundation Celebrate Life 5K Walk/Run held on June 2.

Wantagh resident Una Broderick took first place in the women’s division of the competition and Dan Gargano, of West Islip, won the 5K race in under 16 minutes.

The sponsor of the event, the Miles for Matt Foundation, was created in memory of Matt Scarpati, who died on July 20, 2009 after being struck by a drunken motorcyclist when he pulled over on the Wantagh State bike path to fix a bicycle tire.

His parents, Jim and Lynn Scarpati were at the event, participating in the post-race ceremony and giving out medals to the race’s winners.

Three months after Matt Scarpati was killed, New York State announced plans to install a guardrail along the bike path to safeguard bicyclists and pedestrians.
