Rockville Centre Mayor Francis X. Murray elected 2nd vice president of New York Conference of Mayors

Members of the New York State Conference of Mayors elected Rockville Centre Mayor Francis X. Murray to serve as its second vice president next year during their annual meeting on May 6.

The Conference of Mayors, which was established in 1910, represents 575 cities and villages in New York state, ranging from the smallest village to New York City. His father, Eugene, who served as Rockville Centre’s mayor from 1987 to 2007, and died last month, served as NYCOM’s president in 2004.

Murray said he was honored to be chosen and congratulated the newly elected president, Freeport Mayor Robert T. Kennedy, First Vice President Richard David, mayor of the City of Binghamton, and treasurer Kathy Sheehan, mayor of the City of Albany.

“I look forward to working with Peter A. Baynes, executive director of the Conference of Mayors, and the entire NYCOM staff to advocate NYCOM’s mission to provide essential municipal services through the most effective means in Albany on behalf of our village and the more than 12 million New Yorkers,” Murray said.

Murray was named to NYCOM’s Executive Committee in May 2013 for his commitment to quality public service in New York. The Executive Committee is responsible for governing the state Conference of Mayors and establishing its overall policies.

“Local governments play a critical role in the overall prosperity of our state,” Baynes said. “Mayor Murray’s knowledge and commitment to his community will go a long way toward our efforts to strengthen villages and cities throughout New York. Local officials will benefit greatly from his experience as mayor of a vibrant, full-service village and leader in community revitalization.”
