Rockville Centre’s Kevin McCarthy was recalled by the Kansas City Royals on Monday and made his season debut that evening against the Detroit Tigers at Kauffman Stadium.

The 25-year-old righthander was the seventh and final pitcher to appear for the Royals in the 10-7 loss to the Tigers. Pitching the ninth inning, he got J.D. Martinez to fly out to right field and struck out Justin Upton before retiring Nick Castellanos on another fly ball to right.

Prior to his recall, McCarthy appeared in 16 games for Triple-A Omaha and went 1-1 with a 2.53 earned-run average.

McCarthy made his major league debut last year as a September call-up and tossed 8 1/3 innings over 10 outings, posting a 6.48 ERA with seven strikeouts and five walks. He is on the Royals’ 40-man roster.

Kansas City selected McCarthy in the 16th round of the 2013 draft. Over parts of five minor league seasons, he compiled a 2.91 ERA with 22 saves.

McCarthy is originally from Malverne and was a four-year varsity baseball player at Kellenberg High School in Uniondale. He has lived in Rockville Centre since 2006.
