Snow falls in Malverne, Town declares emergency

Posted

An intense nor’easter drenched Nassau in wet snow Thursday afternoon as temperatures began to dip below freezing. Then the snow took over in full force, snowing throughout the night. It was still snowing Friday. Many area school districts closed Friday.
Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray declared a snow emergency.
"Our town is continuing its proactive practice of having deployed salt spreaders on the road at the first sign of snow," Murray said.
The town is utilizing more than 200 pieces of equipment to spread salt and plow roads, which will be most effective if residents remove their cars from local roadways, according to Murray who, as part of her declaration of a snow emergency, urged residents not to drive.
"By minimizing vehicular traffic, roads can be cleared more quickly and residents can minimize the risks associated with driving in storm conditions," Murray said.
She also

advised residents who shovel their driveways to place snow to the right of the driveway when facing the road. By doing so, residents can reduce the effect of having their driveways "plowed-in" with snow after shoveling.
