Blasting Off
Cradle of Aviation celebrates Apollo 8, the first manned mission to the moon, with holiday recess programming. Apollo entered the lunar orbit on Christmas Eve (1968); that evening the astronauts snapped the first image of their view of Earth, dubbed Earthrise. The museum honors this achievement — the first time in history anyone had seen Earth from such a breathtaking view — with its Earthrise Celebration. Everyone will examine the Apollo missions, the astronauts, and the historic photograph. Young visitors can commemorate this mission with varied activities for all ages. Besides discovering fascinating facts about our lunar neighbor, families can experiment with perspective and create your own “Earthrise” at the activity station.
Wednesday through Tuesday, Dec. 26-Jan.1, 12-4 p.m. Cradle of Aviation Museum, Museum Row, Garden City. (516) 572-4111 or www.cradleofaviation.org.
