U.S. News and World Report’s latest Best Hospitals rankings placed South Nassau Communities Hospital at No. 20 among the 170 hospitals in the state of New York, as well as No. 20 among the118 hospitals in the New York metropolitan area . In addition, South Nassau’s Division of Urology was ranked 35th nationally.

Several other specialties ranked “high performing,” including diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology, GI surgery and orthopedics. South Nassau was also ranked “high performing” for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and cardiac procedures.
South Nassau is the Long Island flagship hospital of the Mount Sinai Health System. Mount Sinai Hospital was ranked No. 14 nationally — up four spots from last year — and eight of its departments were ranked among the top 20 nationally in their specialties.
As a result of South Nassau’s recent partnership with Mount Sinai, South Nassau patients have access to highly specialized care and research at Mount Sinai, as well as an increasing array of services being provided in Oceanside, serving the South Shore of Nassau County.
“Our ranking is a direct result of our commitment to excellence and our mission to treat our patients with leading-edge medical technologies and adhere to the highest standards in patient safety and care,” said Richard J. Murphy, South Nassau’s president and CEO, according to a release. “I am proud of the collaboration between our physicians, nurses and patient care team and thank them for their commitment to the communities we serve.”

Murphy noted that while ratings are not a perfect science in measuring the complexity of quality health care for patients, the U.S. News rankings are “among the most respected in the industry and we are honored to be recognized for the quality care we provide here every day.”
“We are especially pleased that our urology division, under the leadership of Dr. Michael Herman, achieved a nationally ranking for the first time,” Murphy continued. “This is no small accomplishment and reflects the dedication of Dr. Herman and his team to raise the bar with regard to our standards of care in this important area.”
Now in its 27th year, the U.S. News Best Hospitals rankings help guide patients who need a high level of care when facing a particularly difficult surgery, challenging condition or added risk because of other health problems or age. To produce the rankings, U.S. News evaluates data on nearly 5,000 hospitals in 16 adult specialties, nine adult procedures and conditions and 10 pediatric specialties. To be nationally ranked in a specialty, a hospital must excel in caring for the sickest, most medically complex patients.
